Negative Affirmative

Affirmative to negative and vice versa: 

A. Using opposites:

Examples : 

Affirmative : She is a good girl.

Negative : She is not a bad girl. 


Affirmative : She is a very good girl. 

Negatve : She is not a bad girl at all.


Try these

1. She is a good singer. 

2. He is intelligent. 

3. He is successful.   

4. This boy is foolish. 

5. I shall remember your words. 

6. I like it. 

7. I like this book.

8. This boy is intelligent.

9. This boy is very intelligent. 

10. Rose is very beautiful. 

11. He works carefully. 


B. Making interrogatives:  

Affirmatve : She is a great fool.

Negative : Isn't she a great fool?


Try these :

1. He is going to Agartala. 

2. She can write very nicely. 

3. He plays football very well. 

4. Rita is very expert in Mathematics. 

5. Rina is your sister. 

6. We are all friends. 

6. You are my best friend. 

7. Sima wrote very well. 

8. They worked very hard. 

9. He remembered my name. 

10. Everybody wants to be rich. 

11. She is not a good student. 

12. She likes reading. 

13. My brother likes it. 

14. I like milk. 

15. He does not like it. 

16. We did not go there. 


C. Using only /alone  = none but: 

Example

Affirmative : Ram alone can do this.

Negative : None but Ram can do this. 


Affirmative : Only Ram has come.

Negative : None but Ram has come.  


Try these :

1. Only Sima can draw the picture. 

2. Only she sings so nicely. 

3. She alone can do this. 

4. Only Rajat can do this sum. 

5. Only I can lift the box. 

6. Only a man great man can be so kind. 

6. None but Ram is the player here. 

7. Only he can make the mistake. 

8. Only the best student got the prize. 


D. Using as soon as ......verb past form .. = no sooner had ....verb past participle ... than or, No sooner did ....verb present form ....than 


Examples :

Affirmative : As soon as he saw me, he left the room. 

Negative : No sooner did he see me than he left the room.

Or, No sooner had he seen me than he left the room. 


Try these :

1. As soon as I entered the room, everybody became silent.

2. As soon as we entered the station, the train left. 

3. As soon as we went out, the rain started.

4. As soon as we reached home, the rain started. 

5. As soon as the game started, they protested. 

6. As soon as I started reading, my father came in. 


E. Using must = cannot but + verb /connot help + verb + ing: 

Examples

Affirmaive : She must shed tears.  

Negaive : She cannot but shed tears.

Or

She cannot help shedding tears. 


Try these :

1. You must work hard to stand first.  

2. You must go now. 

3. We must do exercise. 

4. We must eat good food.

5. He must take tea in the morning. 

6. She must beg apology. 


F. There is none but/ there is nobody but = everyone / everybody: 

Examples

Affirmative : There is nobody but likes him.

Negative : Everybody likes him. 


Try these :

1. There is none but reads. 

2. There is none but eats. 

3. Everybody likes Netaji. 

4. Everybody trusts me.


G. Using 'it is not that':

Affirmative : Sima is going to school. 

Negaive : It is not that Sima is not going to school. 


Try these :

1. He will go to school. 

2. She likes meat. 

3. A spider eats another spider. 

4. They are going to school. 

5. I went to school yesterday. 

6. She comes here everyday. 

6. She is my enemy. 

7. They are our friends. 

8. Mira is eating biscuits. 


H. Using 'quite /completely +word= not at all + opposite word : 


Affirmative : His success is quite certain. 

Negative : His success is not uncertain at all. 


Try these :

1. He is completely vegetarian. 

2. I am quite well. 

3. She is quite expert. 

4. I am quite satisfied by your work. 


I. Removing 'too':

Examples

Affirmative : He was too weak to walk.

Negative : He was so weak that he could not walk. 


Try these :

1. The patient is too weak to sit. 

2. He is too proud to beg. 

3. He is too strong to be defeated. 

4. The opponent was too weak to win. 

5. The question was too difficult for me to answer. 

6. This problem is complex for us to solve. 


Change into negative and vice-versa:

1. She is a good singer.  

2. She secured very good marks in English. 

3. She scolded me. 

4. I am innocent. 

5. She is not a criminal. 

6. He is my younger brother. 

6. My father is not a doctor. 

7. He does not like to sing. 

8. She is not going to school. 

9. Nobody likes it. 

8. He is too honest to tell a lie. 

9. My father is too weak to run.
