Interchange of simple, complex and compound sentences


From simple to complex:

A. Using 'Though': 

Simple : Inspite of having money, he is not happy.

Complex : Though he has money, he is not happy. 


Try these : 

Change from simple to complex: 

2. Inspite of his sincerity, he did not get the chance.

3. Inspite of his poverty, he is happy. 

4. Inspite of his riches, he is unhappy. 

5. Inspite of his diligence, he did not succeed.

6. Inspite of his honesty, he told a lie. 

7. Inspite of his heroism, he did not win.


B. Using 'because', 'since', 'as'

Simple : She did not go to school for illness.

Complex : She did not go to school because she was ill. 

Or,

Since she was ill, she did not go to school. 

Or, 

As she was ill, she did not go to school. 


Try these :

1. I shall not come today because of rain. 

2. I did not go to school for illness. 

3. She came here to read. 

4. I am studying hard to stand first. 

5. I did not come yesterday due to illness. 


C. Using 'so that' 

Simple : I am reading hard to stand first. 

Complex : I am reading hard so that I can stand first. 


Try these :

1. I am watching tv to know the information. 

2. I went to market to purchase some vegetable. 

3. I went to school to meet the teacher. 

4. He fled to escape punishment. 

5. Rita is reading to pass. 

6. I am working to earn money.  


D. Using 'what', 'where', 'why', 'when', 'who'. 

Simple : I do not know your name. 

Complex : I donot know what your name is. 


Try these :

1. I know your address. 

2. I know the reason of his coming. 

3. I know the reason of his telling the lie. 

4. He knows me.

5. I know the meaning of the words.

6. He knows your name. 

7. Nobody can say the reason of his death. 

8. Tell me the reason of your coming. 

9. Tell me the time of your son's birth. 

10. Tell me about the person living in this village. 

11. I saw a person eating rice. 

12. Do you know the person living in our village.

13. Do you know me? 

14. Tell about the students studying in this school. 


E. Using 'that', 'which', 'whether'. 

Simple : He told me to go there.

Complex : He told me that I should go there. 


Try these :

1. My teacher told me to write. 

2. My father advised me to take exercise regularly. 

3. He called me a mad. 

4. I told him to work hard.  

5. I consider him to be honest. 

6. His success is uncertain. 

7. His failure is certain. 

8. This proves his innocence. 

9. She told me the story told by her mother. 

10. She told me a fine story. 

11. He gave me a red pen.

12. I want the new book. 

13. The green pen is mine.  


Complex to simple

A. Using 'inspite of' or 'despite'

1. Complex : Though he is ill, he is going to school.

Simple : Inspite of his illness, he is going to school. 


Try these :

1. Though he is rich, he is unhappy.

2. Though he was poor, he was happy. 

3. Though he was brilliant, he did not stand first. 

4. Though she is expert in Mathematics, she did not carry good marks. 

5. Though she is honest, she told a lie. 

6. Though he is wealthy, he is not happy. 


B. Using 'being', 'having', 'doing'

Example : 

Complex : She did not go to school because she was ill. 

Simple : Being ill, he did not go to school. 


Try these :

1. She could not climb the tree because she was old. 

2. She could go to school because the rain stopped. 

3. As he was ill, he was taken to a doctor. 

4. As the rain stopped, I could go to school. 

5. I stood first, so I got the prize. 

6. He has bought a pen and he is writing with it.

7. Since he stood first, he got the prize. 

8. As the rain stooped, we could play.

9. As the rain stopped, we went to school.   11. As she is a student, she got the prize.  

10. She saw that I was coming from school.

11. Do you know the boy who is reading? 

12. She knows the person who lives in our village.  

13. As the game was over, we returned home.

14. I saw him when he was coming.  


C. Using 'because of', 'for'. 

Complex : He could not attend school because he was ill. 

Simple : He could not go to school because of illness.


E. Try these :

2. He did not come here because he was ill. 

3. He succeeded because he worked hard.

4. She failed because she was lazy. 

5. He fled from the battlefield because he is coward. 

6. As he is diligent, he succeeded. 


D. Using 'in order to', 'to'. 

He went to school because he wanted to study.  

Ans. He went to school in order to study. 


Try These : 

2. She advised that I should read daily

3. She told me that I should read. 


Using 'the reason', 'the time', 'the place' etc. 

Complex : I know why you have come. 

Simple : I know the reason of your coming. 


Try These : 

1. I know why you are telling this.

2. I don't know when you came. 

3. Nobody knows why he killed himself. 

4. Everybody knows where I am going. 

5. Mira knows when I came here. 

6. Sima told me why she came. 

7. She did not tell when they came. 

8. She told me when she came.  

9. I donot know where she was born. 


Omission of connectives: 

Complex : Do you know the man who is walking along the street?

Simple : Do you know the man walking along the street? 


Try These : 

1. I know the person who is sitting on the bench. 

2. I met a person who is known for his knowledge. 

3. I went to a place which is famous. 

4. I met a man who is lame. 

5. Do you know the man who lives in our neighbourhood?  

6. The man who is tall is my brother. 


Change into complex sentences:

1. He hoped to win the prize. 

2. He admitted stealing the watch. 

3. His hiding place is still unknown. 

4. I wish you to be quiet. 

5. I saw a wounded bird. 

6. The man near me is my brother. 

7. I was the first to hear the news. 

8. Being punished, he wept. 

9. Being ill-treated by his master, he ran away. 

10. He replied to the best of his ability. 

11. Owing to ill health, he resigned. 

12. This was done in my absence. 

13. For fear of punishment, he kept silent. 

14. We eat to live. 

15. After seeing the king, he departed.

Into compound sentence: 

A. Use 'and' to show similar actions:  

Example: 

Simple : Coming home, he started eating. 

Compund : He came home and started eating. 


Simple : Going to market, he bought some vegetables. 

Compound : He went to market and bought some vegetables.


B. Use 'but' to show contradictory actions. 

Example: 

Complex : Though he is poor, his brother is rich.

Compound : He is poor but his brother is rich. 

Complex : Though he did not like me, he praised me. 

Compound : He did not like me but he praised me. 


C. Use 'so' to show related actions. 

Example: 

Complex : Since he wants to stand first, he is studying hard.

Compound : He wants to stand first, so he is studying hard. 


D. Use 'yet' to show contradictory relationship.

Example: 

Complex : Though he is rich, he is unhappy.

Compound : He is rich, yet he is unhappy.


E. Use 'or' to show alternative option or compulsion.

Example: 

Complex : If you donot work hard, you will not pass.

Compound : Work hard, or you will not pass.


Change into compound sentences: 

1. Praising me, he gave me a pen. 

2. Scolding him, The teacher beat him. 

3. Though he did not like me, he praised me.

4. Though he played the game, he did not win any prize. 

5. Though Ram is a good student, his brother is not. 

6. Going to market. Samir did not buy anything. 

7. Though we like him, he does not like us. 

8. Though he was diligent, he did not succeed. 

9. Though he studied well, he did not pass. 

10. Since  he wanted to buy some vegetable, he went to market. 

11. Since he wants to earn money, he is working hard.  

12. Intending to catch the train, he went to the station. 

13. Since he helped me, I am grateful to him.  

14. He is proud because he stood first. 

15. If she does not weep, she will die. 

16. If you donot work hard, you will not  be able to earn money. 

17. If you donot keep quiet, you will be punished. 

18. If you donot do your duty, you will be scolded. 

19. If you donot do exercise, you will be weak.
